Everyone who have seen the Star Wars movies will know R2D2. The droid served Luke as his trusted sidekick during one of his X-wing fights as well as getting him out of sticky situations. With its many funny and amusing scenes in the movie, the famous droid has been part of what makes the Star Wars franchise great. Perhaps that is why the when it was actioned recently, it managed to fetch an impressive last price of $2.76 million.

Yes, you read that right. The original R2D2 from the first trilogy was auctioned recently in honor of May the Fourth.

According to SF Gate, the 43-inch tall droid was compiled used throughout the original trilogy and was auctioned at Profiles of History. At the end of the bidding last Wednesday, the unit fetched a total of $2.76 million. Unfortunately, the bidding house did not disclose who is the lucky winner of the bidding.

In addition to the R2D2 droid, various movie memorabilia from the Star Wars franchise were also auctioned in the event. Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber from the first two films was sold for $450,000. Meanwhile, Darth Vader’s helmet fetched $96,000 in the auction.

Apart form Star Wars memorabilia, the auction also sold some items from other famous sci-fi movies. A collection of 23 ships for Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers sold for $1.8 million. Finally, a helmet worn by Bill Paxton in the Aliens movie was sold for $51,000.

There is no denying that Star Wars has been a part of everyone’s lives. The movie was so iconic that even younger generations of today can be heard quoting some of the famous lines in the movie. At the moment, Disney and Lucasfilm are busy filming the eighth part of the franchise. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released in the cinemas on Dec. 13, 2017.
