The next James Bond film wouldn’t introduce a new 007 after all. Daniel Craig, who portrayed the iconic agent in the last four films, has reportedly agreed to take on the role again, reaching a deal with producer Barbara Broccoli.
News of his return came as a shocker to many, especially since he declared previously that he would rather “slash his wrists” than do another Bond movie after 2015’s Spectre. This has generated casting rumors, linking a host of British actors to the role including Idris Elba (The Dark Tower), who in a hacked Sony email was said to be a top choice. Mad Max’s Tom Hardy has also been rumored to be on the shortlist alongside Tom Hiddleston, Damian Lewis, Aiden Turner, and James Norton.
Citing an unidentified source, The Mirror reports Craig’s decision to board the next installment has the support of his wife, Rachel Weisz. James Bond 25 targets to commence filming next year for a 2019 release.
There’s no director attached to the installment yet, but it has often been rumored that Christopher Nolan of The Dark Knight would be at the helm this time. The widely acclaimed director has recently come out to say that he is indeed interested to direct a Bond movie, but it would only be if the franchise were in need of a major reset.
In an interview with Playboy magazine, he said he would ‘definitely’ do it. “I’ve spoken to the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson over the years. I deeply love the character, and I’m always excited to see what they do with it. Maybe one day that would work out,” he explained. But he says he would have to be needed. “It has to need reinvention; it has to need you. And they’re getting along very well.”
Unfortunately, that’s something the franchise doesn’t need at this point. As the director pointed out, it is in pretty good shape as it currently stands. Sure, it somehow made a bit of a misstep with Spectre, but fans have, so far, embraced the new, grittier version of James Bond that Craig brought to the series.
What’s currently known is that Spectre’s Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are back to write James Bond 25. The director and the actor have yet to be confirmed.
