After Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Netflix fans might be surprised to hear that The Defenders won’t retain the dark themes from those series’. Instead, it looks like we’re going to get an Avengers-esque romp with plenty of action, which is far from bad to be fair. After the critical panning of Iron Fist, going the smash-em-up popcorn route might not be a bad idea.

Mike Colter, the actor who plays as “Hero for Hire” Luke Cage, has confirmed in the Denver comic-con that the upcoming crossover will be a “Summer mash-up of all four of us.” It will have a “certain lightness” to it, and has been described by Colter as both fun and funny. Furthermore, he said that the show is very much like a “summer popcorn thing,” according to LRM.

With blockbuster superstar Sigourney Weaver as the series’ main villain for the first season, it should make for a fun blockbuster series. Her character seems to be an original one, though she could be a surprise character that’s being cleverly hidden. The trailer did show some fun interactions between all the characters, including Luke Cage and Iron Fist, who are really good friends in the comic books.

Defenders will be the first crossover for the four shows, and it will be interesting to see if there are more seasons down the road. The CW have done similar crossovers before with Flash and Arrow, along with the companion show Legends of Tomorrow.

To prepare for the show, Marvel launched a new comic of The Defenders, featuring the same characters from the upcoming Netflix program. Currently, two issues are available for purchase, with The Punisher set to appear in the third one, which should be fun to see. Fans can check out the highly anticipated show next month, on August 18 in Netflix, so here is hoping that it lives up to the hype.
