Baby Driver is one of the most acclaimed movies of 2017, and is another great feather in the already excellent cap of Edgar Wright. One of the more interesting parts of the movie was the reference to Monsters Inc, as well as some footage from the classic Pixar movie. This is an R-rated movie after all, so the fact that Disney allowed the footage to be used is considered a miracle to many fans.

The film even quotes Monsters Inc, with Baby saying “You and I are a team. Nothing is more important than our friendship.” Wright’s film is actually full of references to others, though the director finds a way to weave it into the film’s story, instead of making it feel like a cheap joke. This isn’t Family Guy, so each reference actually adds to Baby’s character, so viewers will appreciate that.

So how did Wright manage to get away with the Disney footage, as well as the quote? According to iO9, it was due to his friendship with Pete Doctor, who wrote and directed the original Monsters Inc. Doctor liked the references, and personally asked Disney to let the footage and reference stay, showing how much sway he has with the company.

Wright even told the website that Pete Doctor is a great human being, calling him a “very fine dude.” He even praised Inside Out, which isn’t much of a surprise since it is one of the best animated movies to come out in the past few years. It’s a nice move from both parties and should make the reference more personal now than it originally was.

Baby Driver should be in theaters now, with an all-star cast that includes Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey and John Hamm. Wright has gained a huge fanbase from his previous films like Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim. He was supposed to direct Ant-Man, but left due to creative differences, though he was still credited as one of the film’s writers.
